The Battle | Volunteering | Donations | The Afterparty

Not too long from now, in front of a museum that looks like a Jawa Sandcrawler, a battle of epic luminescence will break out between warring factions of Jedi and Sith. Defend the galaxy from darkness with UV lightsabers!

1,600 blacklight-reactive, meter-long cardboard tubes will be distributed in front of the Royal Ontario Museum, where there will be six massive blacklight cannons aimed at the crowd :) Wear a costume! The battle will continue until every tube is destroyed!

Volunteers needed: We will be moving the tubes by van on Friday around 7:00pm. Your help would be much appreciated! :) Come to 1153 Queen St. W around that time and give us a call (416) 875-4795. We will also need volunteers to begin cleaning up the tubes the moment they start to break. Trash bags will be provided.

Please donate. Our long-term goal is to be able to purchase plastic, extending, LED-lit, colour-changing lightsabers like these. Then we will have another battle just before Drum Circle starts up again, in the hopes that people will have pick-up lightsaber battles there! Please help us achieve this goal by donating a few bucks, either online or at the battle :)

Come party with us and DATAROCK at RANDOMLAND! After every tube is destroyed, we will ride the rocket together down to CiRCA and continue the fun :) Mark your attendance on Facebook.

The reduced admission list has been sent, but you may be able to grab some reduced passes at the lightsaber battle! See you there :)

I just heard about the NY pillow fight and started reading from there. If you guys had something like this in Los Angeles, I would SO attend. We need more innocent, playful events like this around the world. People are WAAAY too uptight today and nothing brings out the kid in people than a pillow fight, capture the flag, or whatever else you can think of *super water balloon fight? Summer's around the corner*

For future reference, a few of my friends and I all agreed that the stadium right next to the ROM would have been perfect. But I understand you need all these forms and renting and blahdeeblah, yes?

Kevin from Newmindspace

Posted: 09:54 pm [GMT] on November 20 2007

Alright, we can't do a park. I don't know why people are so hung up on parks, but any amount of litter in a park is unacceptable. And boring. It's gotta be on concrete.

And yes, all the tubes were recycled :)

Christina from Toronto

Posted: 08:41 pm [GMT] on November 20 2007

Have you thought about putting this together with a chariety that way the donations would be tax deductable and you can get more media coverage and good karma?
An idea for a future place to hold this would be Christie Pitts.
And finally, did you recycle the tubes or did the paint make it impossible to do so?

becktronica from toronto

Posted: 03:53 am [GMT] on November 20 2007

Though it was a great idea, I have to say I was disappointed. I know the effort you guys put into your events and I commend you for it (most newmindspace events I've been to have been a blast), but this one tanked.
Most people did not get light sabers, the space was too small, and the position (infront of the ROM) was all wrong for the black lights. Too much residual light from the surrounding intersection killed the effect.
I KNOW you guys will do better next time, so keep up the fantastic ideas and I hope you now know what needs to be done to make that work.
keep rockin'
xx

p.s. to all those people just jumping and waving your sabers in the air .. WHAT were you doing? you're supposed to be attacking each other - not partying. Watch Star Wars next time! :P

Kevin from Newmindspace

Posted: 11:57 pm [GMT] on November 19 2007

Besides being incredibly understaffed and underfunded (we need donations in *advance*, not in person), we have drawn up a rough protocol for the next time, if there is one.

This will be elaborated on in the future, but right now our plan for a possible future battle is: 5000 tubes, BYO-LS strongly encouraged, no blacklights, much larger space, loudspeaker system, and four to five distribution centres.

I we have realized the cardinal rule of events like this a long time ago: keep it simple!

Sharon from Toronto

Posted: 09:21 pm [GMT] on November 19 2007

The idea was fantastic. The execution was a problem: way too much emphasis on recording and mugging for youtube and other media... Focus on the actual experience of being there, forget technological playbacks. Tediously long and confusing wait in increasingly dense crowd left us with little wind in our sails and no room to battle. In all, a disappointment.
Advice: forget recording, forget technology (which tends not to work and takes over your event). Your idea was so creative and fun.

Craig from Toronto

Posted: 05:22 am [GMT] on November 19 2007

Hello - so cool. Shame I found out a day late.

One word of warning. BIG crowds are *dangerous*, even nice Toronto crowds. If "crushes" of people aren't anticipated - deaths WILL result. History teaches us this. I'm sorry - I'm obligated to warn you about this. And now you're obligated to take steps to prevent this.

In response, yes, I was there until the very end picking up garbage, and there was a lot. At least they are considering investing in LED lightsabers would reduce the amount of waste for a similar event in the future.

David Oliver from Toronto

Posted: 10:09 pm [GMT] on November 18 2007

"the amount garbage was unexceptable just out of a sign of respect to the people at the Royal Ontario Museum." - Andrew Nguyen

DId you stay until the very end? When every tube had been picked up from the ground and put in a garbage bag. I'm guessing you didn't or you wouldn't be saying that.

To be honest, I didn't ever get a complete tube but I had a awesome time fighting with two half tubes. This event was truely awesome.

Clearly, there were a lot more people than expected, not all of whom get the newmindspace 'thing'. If we do this again the battle space should include phillospiphers walk, that would give us enough room to spread out and battle. It was still AWESOME.

Absolutely loved the event. I met so many great people. People had a great time even though the blacklights were working properly. As a means of improving the event, it would be beneficial to invest in more cardboard tubes rather than invest in working blacklights, I did feel sorry for those who showed up and didn't get a lightsaber while some people had three or four. I do agree with some of the comments above that the place that the event was epic, but a tad small for the vast number of people we had, and the amount garbage was unexceptable just out of a sign of respect to the people at the Royal Ontario Museum. For donations, I think there should have been more volunteers like we had at Capture the Flag walking around with the tins collecting money, or ask people to bring a loonie or toonie so that you guys aren't too far back when it comes to investing money into the event. Lastly, in terms of organization maybe people should have been split into the two teams (Jedi and Sith), like Capture the Flag with only one place to pick up it became really chaotic. Overall well done event, and I cannot wait until the next one.

"keep stealing ideas, the people love it" - Jett

Who else have you seen do this on this scale? People have been having cardboard tube battles for a long while, but not on this scale and few of them are painted with blacklight-reactive paint.

i understand some people feel a sense of entitlement, but to put things into perspective, this was a HUGE event thrown by two people. There is only so much they can do, maybe the people complaining can volunteer next time to help things go smoothly.

Id totally be down to help if i was in the area <3

Another great event! The mob scene to get lightsabers was a little bit terrifying (thanks to the nice folks who helped reunite me with my boyfriend during the throng) and could have been avoided if you had posted some intructions for obtaining sabers beforehand, or had multiple places of distribution.

*IMPORTANT* I happened to pic up a Motorola SD Adapter card for a digital camera that someone had dropped. If anyone is missing one, leave a comment!

If you come up with more original groundbreaking ideas, then maybe looking over organizational flaws can be an easier thing to do.
I enjoyed the mosh though, cute little fan obsessive clusterfuck to grab some tubes, nice quaint little adrenaline rush, it was better then the lightsaber fight itself for the most part, despite cardboard tool enhancements.

Even though it was mostly fun the mosh for the tubes was too much to handle! All my friends and I got stuck in the middle of it and had a hard time breathing and keeping from being trampled! Not many of us got a tube but we are glad nobody got hurt. There needs to be more security and more room. Next time please make sure to over estimate the crowd and have more than enough sabers so people don`t go nuts.

This sounds awesome. I'll definitely be coming to this.

Also, go with the thicker tubes. More fun if it lasts longer.

kevin from Newmindspace

Posted: 03:46 pm [GMT] on October 19 2007

Right now our main dilemma is: do we use 0.03" thick tubes, or 0.045" thick? Because people will be wearing winter coats we're thinking the latter: they will last longer. Then once we have those, we will test them against plastic sabers to see if there is a disadvantage to the tube-users.

I like your idea though: keep 'em as backup until every tube is broken!

Steve from Location unknown

Posted: 02:36 am [GMT] on October 19 2007

Kevin, it's no problem for me (or anyone else with plastic ones) to use the tubes for the main event, and keep the plastic ones oh hand in the event of post-game duelling or the like.

Steve, we haven't figured out what to do about that actually - we were kind of hoping to be able to declare the "last colour standing" or something, and a plastic lightsaber can bend a lot without breaking. Then again, a bunch of cardboard tubes might totally destroy the plastic one, making it okay.

We are trying two different thicknesses of cardboard tubes - we'll let you know after the tests :)
