queen of hearts feb 13 2008

subscribe toronto new york my city?

Queen of Hearts is our sorta-annual event where we paint the town pink! In 2006, we used chalk paint and heart-shaped sponges to cover huge parts of the sidewalks of Queen St. W with little pink hearts. This year we're hoping we can cover the snowbanks that line the sidewalk!

We will meet at the corner of Queen and John just before midnight, and distribute the block assignments, and spray hearts on the snowbanks.

Volunteers! Please type your name, phone number (optional) and e-mail address, separated by commas:

We will e-mail one reminder :)

Also, you could really help us out by bringing the following materials:

water
spray bottle
red tempera paint
plastic sheet with heart cut out of it*

* You can use a plastic file folder, a sheet of foam, a disposable plate, etc. All it needs is a hear-shaped hole in it and you're good to go :) We will have a few extras. Bring some extras, too!

To be honest, it didn't look as well as last years, but it certainly made me smile. :)

The Sydney event is going strong - while you have to worry about frozen streets, we're hoping that the downpour of rain we've got going will clear up. Fortunately we've got undercover areas that we can attack with hearts. I have 5 crates of coloured chalk delivered to my office yesterday.

Oh yes, and it's Valentine's Day here already. I've set the dual clock on my phone to show me Toronto Time so that I can hopefully text just before midnight and wish you all well.

Does acrylic paint work? How about mixing food colouring and water or another base? I forgot to pick up tempera paint (but I do have some spray bottles!)

Perhaps, but snow melts, drips, and gets blown around. Those hearts are not going to stay where they're put. I'm picturing a lot of shoes and pant cuffs being inadvertantly dyed pink by tinted slush once things start to thaw.

We will be spraying it on the parts you can't really walk on - perhaps an illustrative photo would be in order?

I'm sure it will look great first thing in the morning, but I'm worried about what's going to happen to it after a few hours of pedestrian traffic.

We may decide to use spray bottles filled with food dye and heart-shaped stencils. We will send out an e-mail with concrete plans tomorrow morning.

have you seen the snow out there tonight? Even if the sidewalks are cleaned, there is still a tonne of ice...any alternate plans?

Don't know how this is going to happen with the sidewalks covered in ice and snow. Are we going to shovel?

I have put the efforts in, and in Sydney there will be a sister event called the Heart Attack.
